Advanced Woke syndrome in British schools

It was in 2002 that a BBC poll involving more than a million votes across Britain found that the British public saw Winston Churchill as the greatest Briton in history.

Whatever you might think of the poll (Princess Diana was ranked above Darwin, Newton, and Shakespeare), what is incontrovertible is that Sir Winston Churchill is an exceptional person.

His short CV would include being twice the former Prime Minister, a Nobel Award recipient, and one who, against the common wisdom and facing enormous political pressure, mounted a courageous and pivotal moral and military stand against the Nazis, ultimately resulting in the destruction of one of the vilest, most racist, and deadliest forces in human history.

Not even 20 years on, the Holy Trinity Church of England Primary School in Richmond has saw fit to remove his name from one of its houses for the sake of “diversity”. Which titan of world history did they choose to replace Churchill? Marcus Rashford, a 24 year old footballer.

While this decision would strike most sensible people as a downgrade for that house, there are some, increasingly and alarmingly in the educational system, who are so infected by Woke ideology that this choice would no doubt strike them as sensible and fair-minded.

This movement to cancel even the most exemplary of people by fabricating history or going through their laundry baskets has really intensified recently. It was in 2018 that a group of tepid rabble-rousers stormed Blighty Café in Finsbury Park, where the full English breakfast is known as ‘The Winston’. They protested that the café, daring to have an English-theme and a Churchill breakfast, supported colonialism.

Activists annoying patrons with their piffle.

This idiocy and self-indulgent public halo-polishing quickly backfired – the café’s TripAdvisor ratings shot up as a result of people showing solidarity with the café and against the cry-bullies.

The difference between these two episodes is that whereas the protesters in 2018 were students, those who decided to erase Churchill in 2021 are teachers, who are responsible for educating the next generation.

The teachers claimed that the decision to drop Churchill’s name was made after consulting with the students. But one does not need to wonder where the children got the idea from that honouring Churchill is somehow ‘problematic’.

This is not the first school to take similar actions. In February, the Seaford Head School in East Sussex removed Churchill’s (and JK Rowling’s) names from their houses. The students apparently wrote that Churchill “was a figure who promoted racism and inequality, unfairly imprisoning and torturing many.” Again, no prizes where these teenagers got these false ideas from.

Not only are these teachers imparting false history, they are promoting the worst version of identitarianism that rips at the fabric of an otherwise thriving multiethnic nation. Ironically, the journalist Allison Pearson released an email from an unnamed UK school that is requiring children who have mask-exemptions to wear a yellow badge. No doubt the teachers in this school would agree with the removal of the name of one of the greatest anti-fascists while implementing rules redolent of fascism.

This kind of moral self-flagellation no doubt comes partly from the US, where statues of even Jefferson and Washington, two of the greatest emancipators in human history, are under attack.

However, even in the US, the recent unlikely Republican victory in the Virginia gubernatorial election, based in large part on differences regarding the teaching of critical race theory in schools, show that when the Woke begins to target the children, parents will rise up.

Now British parents should, like their American cousins, take a stand and protect their children from the poison being drip-fed to them in these schools, which are trying to elide the best achievements of your own civilization and to recrudesce a culture based on racial segregation. In Churchill’s own words, “Never, never, never give in!”
